Etymology: < Greek ὑγείᾱ, late and non-Attic form of ὑγίεια health, Ὑγίεια the goddess of health, < ὑγιής sound, healthy. From the same Greek form were late Latin Hygēa and Hygīa (compare Darēus and Darīus = Greek Δαρεῖος). The rare variant Hygiea represents Greek ὑγίεια.
