imum coelin.

Brit. /ˌɪmᵿm ˈtʃeɪli/, U.S. /ˌɪməm ˈtʃeɪli/
Forms: 1500s– imum caeli, 1500s– imum coeli, 1600s imo caeli (inflected form, after the preposition in), 1600s imo coeli (inflected form, after the preposition in). Also with capital initials.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin imum coeli.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin imum coeli (1511 or earlier), imum caeli (1575 or earlier), literally ‘bottom of the sky’ < classical Latin imum , use as noun of neuter of īmus lowest (see imit n.) + caelī , genitive of caelum sky, heaven (see celestial adj.); compare classical Latin imum caelum (Vitruvius), in post-classical Latin also imum coelum, the lowest heaven. The expression imum coeli is sometimes attributed by 16th-cent. authors to the astrologer Firmicus (4th cent.), but he uses imum caelum . According to Firmicus the corresponding Greek expression is ὑπόγειον (compare hypogeum n.), which is used in this sense by the Hellenistic Greek astrologer Vettius Valens. Compare also post-classical Latin imum medium coeli the lowest mid-heaven (1560 or earlier). In the forms imo caeli, imo caeli (compare e.g. quot. 1639) after classical Latin imō, ablative of imum, the case used with Latin in in this context.
