a. Astronomy. The aspect of an object in the solar system when situated 90 degrees from the sun as seen from earth (formerly also †quadrature aspect); a similar aspect between any two celestial objects or zodiacal signs; frequently in in quadrature. Also: each of the two points at which the moon is 90 degrees from the sun as seen from the earth, i.e. midway between the points of conjunction and opposition. Cf. octant n. 2, syzygy n. 1b.
