Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin informativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin informativus formative, imparting form (frequently from early 13th cent. in British sources, in both medicine and philosophy), instructive (1620 in a British source) < classical Latin informāt- , past participial stem of informāre inform v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare Middle French, French informatif that gives a form, shaping (c1400), that serves to show or represent (1520), that imparts knowledge or communicates information (1939). Compare informatory adj.
