Etymology: < post-classical Latin artation-, artatio narrowing, constriction, restraint, restriction (frequently from 13th cent. in British sources), constraint, compulsion (14th cent. in British sources) < classical Latin artāt- , past participial stem of artāre to compress (see art v.1) + -iō -ion suffix1.
Chiefly Scottish. Now rare (poetic in later use).
Compulsion; constraint; (also) urging, instigation.
