Etymology: < Old French a(s)set(pronounced /aˈseθ/), also ases , asez , noun, originally the same word as asez , assez adverb ‘enough’ < late Latin ad satis , for classical Latin sat , satis , ‘enough’ (see asset n.). In the phrase satis facĕre, Old French aset fere, fere aset, ‘to make amends,’ the adverb was treated as a noun ‘amends,’ nominative ases (asez), objective aset, which was the form adopted in English. As final -t in Old French was = /θ/ (compare faith, poortith), aseth was the reg. Middle English spelling. The word had no connection in English with assets, and was obsolete before the latter came into English use.
