Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: apple-john n.
Etymology: Alteration (with reversal of the elements) of apple-john n. Compare slightly earlier jenneting n.
Now chiefly historical.
A kind of apple said to keep for two years and having after this time a shrivelled, withered appearance; = apple-john n.Sometimes identified with the Northern Greening (see greening n.2 1a). Later examples appear to refer to other kinds of apple (see quots. 1993, 1995).
