Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Oriya. Partly a borrowing from Panjabi. Etymons: Oriya khaṇḍā; Panjabi khaṇḍā.
Etymology: < Oriya khaṇḍā kind of sword and Panjabi khaṇḍā kind of sword, the emblem of Sikhism, both < Prakrit khaṇḍa, of uncertain origin; perhaps compare Sanskrit khaṇḍ- to pound, break, and khaḍga kind of sword.
1. A double-edged sword with a wide blade, used in Sikhism for ceremonial purposes.
