1904 Jewish Encycl. VII. 485/2 ‘Kiddushin’ is the rabbinical term for betrothal, because the wife becomes thereby the sacrosanct possession of the husband... In the Mishnah, Kiddushin is divided into four chapters and comprises..forty-seven paragraphs.
1936 H. Freedman in I. Epstein Babylonian Talmud VIII. p. xi The Hebrew name Ḳiddushin (‘Consecration’) for betrothal, is worthy of note. The Talmud defines it as an act whereby the bride is rendered sacrosanct.
