Etymology: < kink v.1 + hoast n. Compare similarly Dutch kinkhoest (1588 as kinck-hoest ), Middle Low German kinkhōste , and also (with differing forms of the first element: see kink v.1) early modern Dutch kieckhoest (1554), German Keichhusten (18th cent.), Keuchhusten (19th cent.), Old Swedish kyke hosta (Swedish kikhosta ), Danish kighoste (also regional kinkhoste ). Compare also later kinkcough n., chincough n.With the β. forms compare chink v.1 and chincough n. The γ. forms (especially the Middle English forms kyngys hooste, kyngys hoste) apparently reflect folk-etymological association with king n.

A respiratory disorder characterized by bouts of severe coughing, typically followed by a noisy, gasping intake of breath; spec. the infectious bacterial disease whooping cough (pertussis). Cf. chincough n., kinkcough n.
