Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Manx. Etymon: Manx kishan.

Etymology: Apparently < Manx kishan (although this is first attested in the early 19th cent.), cognate with or formed similarly to Irish ciseán kind of basket < cis wicker container (see kish n.¹) + -án diminutive suffix.The expected cognate of Irish cis is not attested in Manx.

Manx English. Now historical and rare.

A unit of capacity for dry goods equal to eight quarts (approx. 9.09 litres). Also figurative: a large quantity.In quot. c1694 perhaps: a basket or container having such a capacity.
