Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Labrador.
Etymology: < Labrador (French Labrador), the name of a large peninsula in eastern Canada, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.The region was probably named after the byname Lavrador ( < Portuguese lavrador farmer, landowner) of the Portuguese explorer João Fernandes, who sailed to the east coast of northern North America in the 1490s. The name is attested in English and French contexts from at least the mid 16th cent. Compare also post-classical Latin terra nova..inventa de laboradore (c1516), Spanish tierra del Labrador (c1525).
