Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French lachesis; Latin Lachesis.
Etymology: < (i) French lachesis (1823 in the passage translated in quot. 1823, or earlier), and its etymon (ii) scientific Latin Lachesis, genus name (F. M. Daudin 1803, in Magasin encyclopédique 5 435; compare earlier use as a specific name (1768 with reference to a cobra)) < classical Latin Lachesis , the name of one of the Fates < ancient Greek Λάχεσις , the name of one of the Fates, also denoting a person's lot or destiny < λαγχάνειν to obtain by lot, of unknown origin + -σις -sis suffix.In sense 2 after German Lachesis (1835 in the source translated in quot. 1841 at sense 2), itself after scientific Latin Lachesis (1834 in this sense, attributed to C. Hering; compare French lachesis (1835 in a paper by C. Hering, denoting both the genus of snakes and the homoeopathic preparation)). Hering first described experiments on himself with the preparation in Archiv für die homöopathische Heilkunst 10 (1831) 1–23, but at that date used the word only to denote the snake.
