Etymology: < Macao (Portuguese Macau , Chinese (Mandarin) Aòmén ), the name of a city and former Portuguese dependency on the south-east coast of China, which is noted for gambling. Compare French macao (1867 in Littré); compare also macco n. and Macanese adj.Portuguese Macau (16th cent.; in early use also Amacao, Amaqua, etc.) is < a Chinese (Cantonese) place name of uncertain form (the modern Cantonese name is Oumun, after Mandarin). Compare Japanese †Amakawa (a1573; later Makao). The place name Macao is attested in English from c1602 (earlier in form Amacao (1585)). Macao is situated on the west side of the Pearl River estuary opposite Hong Kong. China resumed sovereignty over Macao on 20 Dec. 1999.
