Etymology: < the genitive of the name of Wilhelm Friederich Ludwig (1790–1865), German surgeon, who described the condition in 1836 ( Medicinisches Correspondenz-Blatt des Württembergischen ärztlichen Vereins 6 21) + angina n., after scientific Latin angina Ludovici (1869 or earlier; perhaps alteration of angina Ludwigii (1857 or earlier)).Compare German Ludwig'sche Angina (1857 or earlier), Ludwig's Angina (1868 or earlier). Compare the following slightly earlier example of scientific Latin angina Ludovici in an English context:1869 G. H. Humphreys & C. E. Hackley tr. F. von Niemeyer Text-bk. Pract. Med. I. 460 This disease (which is often improperly called ‘gangrenous’ inflammation of the neck, and which we name Angina Ludovici, after the deceased Ludwig, of Stuttgard, who first fully described it) is said by reliable observers to occur as a primary and idiopathic disease, and sometimes to be epidemic.
