Etymology: < magnesium n. + -o- connective + chromite n.; introduced (see quot. 1892) as a more transparent substitute for German Magnochromit magnochromite n., after magnesioferrite n.

Mineralogy.

Originally: a mineral, (Mg,Fe)Cr₂O₄, analogous to chromite (FeCr₂O₄), with magnesium replacing much of the iron. Now usually: a spinel of the general formula (Mg,Fe)(Cr,Al)₂O₄, spec. the endmember, MgCr₂O₄ (picrochromite).
