单词 maint
释义

maintadj.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French maint.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Old French, Middle French, French maint, meint many, many a (in Middle French also maint un ), further etymology uncertain: perhaps < a Germanic derivative noun ultimately < the base of many adj. In modern French the word is chiefly literary; in all periods in French it precedes the noun, rather than being used as postmodifier as in quots. 1801, 18661.17th and 18th cent. writers appear often to have described Anglo-Norman words as ‘old’ without differentiating them from obsolete English words, even if they did not occur in texts written in English: see quot. 1706, and compare quot. 1688 at main n.3 1.
Obsolete. rare (pseudo-archaic, chiefly poetic).
Many, numerous.
