Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French mahaleb, macalep, macaleb, maguelet.
Etymology: < Middle French, French mahaleb, †macalep, †macaleb (1558; 1542 as maguelet, with suffix substitution) < Arabic maḥlab, denoting the tree, its fruit, and the kernels of the fruit. Compare post-classical Latin almahaleb (1479; almachareb (1471)), mahaleb (1593), Italian macalepo ‘a kinde of perfume or sweete smell’ (Florio 1598).
The fragrant kernels of the fruits of a Eurasian cherry, Prunus mahaleb, which are used in perfumery; the tree itself (also called St Lucie cherry), which has hard scented wood and is used as a dwarf grafting-stock for cherries.
