Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mahlzeit.
Etymology: < German Mahlzeit mealtime (see mealtide n.), shortened < the phrase gesegnete Mahlzeit lit. ‘blessed mealtime’.In German, the expression is also used as an informal midday greeting between friends or colleagues.
A salutation before or after eating.
