Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish manga.
Etymology: < Spanish manga sleeve (cape or poncho in Mexican Spanish and Central American Spanish; used in a number of extended senses, including the phrase manga de cruz : see sense 2) < classical Latin manica manica n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (ma·ŋgă) /ˈmaŋɡa/.

Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese manga.
Etymology: < Japanese manga (1799 or earlier) < man- rambling, aimless, involuntary ( < Middle Chinese) + -ga (formerly -gwa) picture ( < Middle Chinese; compare Chinese huà).The Japanese word was popularized (as mangwa) by the artist Katsushika Hokusai as the title of the three volumes of drawings on historical, mythological, and contemporary subjects, published from 1812; the term was designed to convey his spontaneous, eccentric drawing style. The word is first found in English context as the title of this work. Compare:1884 tr. J. J. Rein Japan: Trav. & Researches (1998) 264 (note) Hokusai..represents them [sc. the Portuguese] in his Mangwa (sketch-book).1888 S. Bing Artistic Japan I. iii. 28 It is a page taken from his Mangwa. Initially applied to illustrations and scrolls, Japanese manga was applied specifically to comic-book art of similar style in the 1920s or earlier. Japanese manga is sometimes translated ‘involuntary pictures’.
A Japanese genre of cartoons and comic books, drawn in a meticulously detailed style, usually featuring characters with distinctive large, staring eyes, and typically having a science-fiction or fantasy theme, sometimes including violent or sexually explicit material. Occasionally also applied to animated film (cf. anime n.3). In extended use, denoting cartoons in this style from other countries. Frequently attributive.
