Of land or soil: manured or improved with marl.The form cited in quot. c1265 is a lost field name; the place name attested in quot. 1296 survives as Marland Bridge, East Sussex.

Origin: Probably formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: marl , marble n., -ed suffix2.
Etymology: Probably < marl, contracted form of marble n. (compare marl n.4, marl n.5) + -ed suffix2. Connection with Middle French merellé chequered (1486; < merel merels n.) seems less likely.
Chiefly Scottish.
Marbled, mottled, spotted; variegated, chequered, or streaked; esp. made from (yarn containing) threads of different colours twisted together (cf. marl n.5).
