Etymology: < marl v.1 + -er suffix1. Compare post-classical Latin marlator (from 1211 in British sources), Middle French marneeur (French marneur).The early evidence comes entirely from surnames. It is unclear whether these are examples of an English or an otherwise unattested Anglo-Norman word; however, compare the name Willelmus le Marlehewere (1327).
Now rare.
