Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Marsipobranchii.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Marsipobranchii, former group name (C. L. Bonaparte Iconografia della fauna italica (1841) III. 1) < ancient Greek μάρσιππος pouch (see marsupium n.) + βράγχια gills (see -branch comb. form).
Zoology.
A. n.
A vertebrate having gills in the form of pouches opening to the surface through a pore rather than a slit, belonging to the former class Marsipobranchii (now the superclass Agnatha), of which lampreys and hagfishes are the only living members. Cf. agnathan n. and adj.
