Etymology: < French matachia (1603), perhaps (via Basque-Micmac trade jargon of 16th–17th cent.) < early Basque patacha silver coin < Spanish pataca (see patacon n.).
Obsolete.
An adornment (variously of shell beads, dyed porcupine quills, or trade beads) worn by some North American Indian peoples.
