Origin: A borrowing from Portuguese. Etymon: Portuguese matamatá.
Etymology: < Brazilian Portuguese matamatá (1631) < Tupi matamatá. Compare Italian matamata (1780), scientific Latin matamata (first attested in B. Merrem Tentamen Systematis Amphibiorum (1820) 12).
A South American freshwater turtle, Chelus fimbriatus (family Chelidae), with a grotesque appearance, having a knobby carapace, and a long neck and broad flat head fringed with irregular projections of skin.
