Etymology: < post-classical Latin maxima maxim n.1 Sense 2 appears in post-classical Latin in the 14th cent., perhaps by ellipsis for maxima nota; compare French maxime (c1630 in this sense).With sense 1 compare maximum n. 1.
1. A principle or rule of law or conduct; an axiom. Cf. maxim n.1 Obsolete.
