Origin: A borrowing from German, combined with an English element. Etymons: German melanokrat , -ic suffix.
Etymology: < German melanokrat, adjective (W. C. Brögger Eruptivgesteine des Kristianiagebietes (1898) iii. 263; < melano- melano- comb. form + ancient Greek κρατεῖν to rule, prevail; compare -cratic comb. form) + -ic suffix. Compare leucocratic adj. at leuco- comb. form 1.
Geology.
Of a rock: dark-coloured, rich in dark-coloured minerals.
