Etymology: < post-classical Latin miseraicus (from a1230 in British sources), meseraicus (from c1200 in British sources) < Hellenistic Greek μεσαραϊκός (Galen) < μεσάραιον mesaraeum n. + -ικός -ic suffix. Compare Old French mesarache (c1256), Old French, Middle French mesaraïque (1314; French mésaraïque). N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (mesărē·ik) /mɛsəˈreɪk/.
