单词 mendole
释义

mendolen.

Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French mendole.
Etymology: < French mendole (1547 in Middle French) < Old Occitan amendolla (1445; Occitan mendòla, amendola), further etymology uncertain and disputed: compare Italian mendola (1598; a1536 as menola ( > French ménole (1671)), of which the Old Occitan word may be a loan (although attested slightly earlier); probably ultimately (via Latin) < ancient Greek μαινίς sprat, or the cognate Hellenistic Greek μαίνη, although probably altered by formal analogy with other words. N.E.D. (1906) gives the pronunciation as (me·ndoul) /ˈmɛndəʊl/.
Obsolete.
A picarel, esp. the blotched picarel, Spicara maena. Cf. cackerel n. 1.
