Etymology: < scientific Latin Menispermum, genus name (adopted by Linnaeus in his Species Plantarum (1753) I. 340, after J. P. de Tournefort in Mém. de l'Acad. Royale des Sci. 1705 (1706) 237) < ancient Greek μήνη moon (see month n.¹) + -i- -i- connective + ancient Greek σπέρμα seed (see sperm n.), referring to the crescent-shaped seeds. Compare French ménisperme (1797 in plural). Compare earlier moonseed n.
