Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Mesopterygium.
Etymology: < German Mesopterygium (C. Gegenbaur Grundzüge der vergleichenden Anatomie (ed. 2, 1870) vii. 684) < meso- meso- comb. form + ancient Greek πτερύγιον (see pterygium n.). Compare metapterygium n. and propterygium n.
Ichthyology.
In elasmobranch fishes: the central portion of the cartilaginous skeleton at the base of each pectoral fin.

1871 Amer. Naturalist 5 584 In the true fishes the propterygium and mesopterygium are both wanting, excepting in Amia, Lepidosteus, and the sturgeons, where a cartilaginous mesopterygium exists, according to Gegenbaur.
