Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin merācus , -ious suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin merācus ( < merus mere adj.2 + -ācus , suffix forming adjectives) + -ious suffix. With classical Latin merācus compare ēbriācus drunk < ēbrius (see ebriety n.): the reason for the suffixation is unclear in either case. Compare meracity n.With form meraceous compare -eous suffix.
