Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese mitsumata.
Etymology: < Japanese mitsumata < mitsu-mata three-pronged fork, trident (with reference to its three-forked branches), trifurcation (9th cent.; 1604 as mitçumata in the supplement to Vocabulario da Lingoa de Iapam) < mitsu three (things) ( < mi three + -tsu, suffix forming numeral nouns) + mata fork.
A deciduous shrub, Edgeworthia papyrifera (family Thymelaeaceae) bearing clusters of fragrant yellow flowers, which is native to China but widely cultivated in Japan, where its bast fibre is used in the manufacture of paper.
