Etymology: < mile n.1 + mark n.1Attested earlier as a field name: Milemerke (c1167) in the North Riding of Yorkshire. Compare also Old English mīlgemearc measure by miles (one isolated occurrence in Beowulf; compare quot. 1895).
A milestone or other object placed to indicate the distance of a mile from a starting point or from another mark; (also) a distance of a mile. Also figurative.
