Origin: Of uncertain origin.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Various possible origins have been suggested, such as that the word arises from back-slang for eke-name n., or that it represents a specific use of monarch n.1 or of monogram n.3 (in the latter case perhaps blended with signature n. and adj.): see further P.
