单词 milliary
释义

milliaryadj.n.

Brit. /ˈmɪlɪəri/, U.S. /ˈmɪliˌɛri/
Forms: late Middle English miliarie, late Middle English 1600s–1800s miliary, 1600s milliarie, 1700s– milliary.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin mīliārius, mīliārium, miliarius.
Etymology: As adjective < classical Latin mīliārius, mīlliārius comprising a thousand (frequently designating military units), a thousand paces long < mīlle thousand (see milli- comb. form) + -ārius -ary suffix1. As noun in sense A. 1 < classical Latin mīliārium, mīlliārium milestone, use as noun of neuter singular of mīliārius, mīlliārius, with reference to the fact that a mile comprised a thousand paces (compare mile n.1). As noun in sense A. 2 < post-classical Latin miliarius, milliarius (early 5th cent. in Jerome and Augustine), use as noun of masculine singular of classical Latin mīliārius, mīlliārius, after Byzantine Greek χιλιαστής (apparently only recorded in Latin authors: see chiliast n.). Compare Middle French, French †miliaire (Roman) mile (1414; 1245 in Old French as milaite , probably transmission error; also Middle French milliare (1506): see also milliarium n.).Post-classical Latin saeculum milliarium (see sense A. 3) is found on a coin of 247 a.d., denoting the thousandth year from the founding of Rome. With milliary column, stone compare French colonne milliaire, pierre millaire (both 1610).
