Etymology: < a first element probably ultimately derived < the (reduplicated) syllable /ba/ characteristic of early infantile vocalization (which also underlies babble v.1, baboon n., baban n., babe n., etc.; compare earlier babbart n.) + lipped adj. Compare later blabber-lipped adj. at blabber adj. Derivatives, blobber-lipped adj. at blobber adj. Derivatives, blubber-lipped adj. at blubber adj. Derivatives.Apparently revived in the 20th cent.
archaic and rare after early 17th cent.
