Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French misère ouverte.
Etymology: < French misère ouverte (1847 or earlier) < misère misère n. + ouverte , feminine of ouvert open (see overt adj.).
A declaration of misère (see misère n.) in which the caller's hand is displayed to the other players.

1906 Harmsworth Encycl. VIII. 5608/2 Misère ouverte is the same as a misère, only in this call immediately after the first trick has been played the caller (but not his adversaries) must expose the remaining twelve cards.
