Origin: A borrowing from Assamese. Etymon: Assamese meṭhan.
Etymology: < Assamese meṭhan (also in forms meṭhin and meṭhon) wild mountain cow, probably < a pre-Aryan language. Compare late Sanskrit meṭha ram, buck, Hindi meṭhī ewe. N.E.D. (1906) gives only the pronunciation (mi·þăn) /ˈmɪθən/.
A domesticated ox, Bos frontalis, which is derived from the gaur and is found only in the highlands of Assam and adjacent areas (Burma (Myanmar) and Bangladesh). Also called gayal.Sometimes regarded as a subspecies of the gaur, B. gaurus frontalis.
