Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly formed within English, by derivation. Partly a borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Monandria n., -ous suffix, Greek μόνανδρος.
Etymology: In sense 1 < Monandr- (in Monandria n.) + -ous suffix; compare monandrian adj. In sense 2 < ancient Greek or Hellenistic Greek μόνανδρος (see Monandria n.) + -ous suffix.
1. Botany. Of a flower: (originally) belonging to or having the characteristics of the Linnaean class Monandria; (now) having a single stamen.
