Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French monosyllabe; Latin monosyllabum, monosyllabon.
Etymology: < Middle French monosyllabe (1521 as monosillaibe ; 1529 as adjective) and its etymons classical Latin or post-classical Latin monosyllabum and monosyllabon (see monosyllabon n.). Compare earlier monosyllable n., and also polysyllabe n. Compare Italian monosillabo (1406 as adjective, 1575 as noun).
