Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Montgomery.
Etymology: < the name of William Fetherston Montgomery (1797–1859), Irish gynaecologist, who described these structures of the areola in 1837 ( Expos. Signs & Symptoms Pregnancy 59). Compare German Montgomery'sche Drüsen (in sense 1; G. Rein 1882, in Arch. f. mikroskop. Anat. 23 690).Montgomery was not the first to describe these structures, but provided the most detailed account of them and of their changes in pregnancy.
Anatomy.
1. Montgomery gland n. (also Montgomery's gland, gland of Montgomery) an areolar gland, consisting of a milk-secreting portion and a lactiferous duct with associated sebaceous glands.

2. Montgomery's tubercle n. (also tubercle of Montgomery) each of the small rounded projections formed by the areolar glandular structures, esp. when enlarged during pregnancy.
