Origin: A borrowing from Kikuyu. Etymon: Kikuyu mũratina.

Etymology: < Kikuyu mũratina sausage tree < mũ-, singular class prefix, often used for trees + -ratina, denoting both the tree and its fruit, probably < a Kalenjin language (compare Nandi ratinwa, ratinwet, denoting the tree).The use of the word to denote the drink (see sense 2) appears to be an English innovation. In the form maratina apparently showing alteration after the corresponding Swahili class prefix ma-.
