Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin myrtītēs.
Etymology: < classical Latin myrtītēs wine made from or flavoured with myrtle berries (Columella, Pliny) < Hellenistic Greek μυρτίτης (Dioscorides) < ancient Greek μύρτος myrt n. + -ίτης -ite suffix1.The Latin and Greek words sometimes occur in apposition with vīnum wine and οἶνος respectively. Hellenistic Greek μυρτίτης is recorded earlier as the name of a plant, myrtle spurge (Theophrastus); classical Latin myrtītēs is also used in this sense (Pliny).
Obsolete.
Wine made from or flavoured with myrtle berries. Also †wine myrtite.
