A structure containing symbiotic fungi or fungal spores, found in many wood-boring insects such as ambrosia beetles and wood wasps.

1963 L. R. Batra in Trans. Kansas Acad. Sci. 66 226 Francke-Grosmann in 1956 reported that certain wood boring Ipidae carried viable inoculum in sac-like structures located at particular sites and characteristic of the species. It was subsequently shown that such fungal repositories were of wide occurrence among ambrosia beetles. These structures are here referred to as mycangia.
1977 O. W. Richards & R. G. Davies Imms's Gen. Textbk. Entomol. (ed. 10) II. 880 All..have mandibular mycangia—cavities for the probable transference of fungal spores, such as are also found in the Cucujidae and Sphindidae.
1996 Mycologia 88 739 The mycangium of Dendroctonus adjunctus, located under a callus that surrounds the prothorax, has been recognized but the mycangial fungus has not yet been identified.
