Etymology: < scientific Latin Mycetes, former genus name (J. K. W. Illiger Prodromus systematis mammalium et avium (1811) 70) < ancient Greek μυκητής bellower < μυκᾶσθαι to bellow (see moo v.) + -της, suffix forming agent nouns.

Zoology. disused.

A former genus comprising the howler monkeys (family Cebidae); a member of this genus.The genus is now known by the earlier name Alouatta Lacépède 1799.

Compare scientific Latin -mycetes, used in group names in fungal classifications (along with -myci) from 1817 or earlier, e.g. in Coniomycetes, Hyphomycetes, Pyrenomycetes; corresponding German plural forms in -myceten were in use from 1860 or earlier.In quot. 1874 after German Myceten, plural noun (1874 in the source translated; now Myzeten ). The scientific Latin singular Myces appears as a genus name in 1808. The disyllabic pronunciation reflects a reinterpretation of the word as the plural of mycete n.
