Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Urdu. Or (ii) a borrowing from Persian. Etymons: Urdu mašʿalčī; Persian mašʿalčī.
Etymology: < Urdu mašʿalčī torch-bearer, a servant in the household of Europeans, or its etymon Persian mašʿalčī torch-bearer < mašʿal mussal n. + -čī, agent suffix ( < Turkish -çi, -ci).
Anglo-Indian. Now rare.
A torch-bearer. In later use also: a household servant (see quots. c1803, 1886). Also Nautical: a member of a South Asian ship's crew who looks after the lamps.

1886 H. Yule & A. C. Burnell Hobson-Jobson Mussaulchee, the word properly means a link-boy... The word is however still more frequent as applied to a humble domestic, whose duty was formerly of like kind..but who now looks after lamps and washes dishes, &c., in old English phrase ‘a scullion’.
