Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian orzo.
Etymology: < Italian orzo, literally ‘barley’ (1231–62; c1200 as †orzeo ; < classical Latin hordeum barley: see hordeate n.), in allusion to the shape of the pasta.
A variety of pasta formed in small pieces shaped like grains of barley or rice.
