Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin Nabataeus , -an suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin Nabataeus, Nabathaeus ( < Hellenistic Greek Ναβαταῖος, Ναβαθαῖος; compare Arabic Nabaṭī of or relating to the Nabateans < al-Nabaṭ the Nabateans) + -an suffix. With use as noun compare classical Latin Nabataeī (plural), Hellenistic Greek Ναβαταίοι inhabitants of Nabatea.In form Nabatheen after Middle French Nabatheen (1562 in the passage translated in quot. 1601 at sense A. 1); in form Nabathees (plural) after Middle French Nabathees (plural; 1576 in the passage translated in quot. 1585 at sense A. 1). Compare also Portuguese Nabateu (16th cent.).

1. A member of an ancient people who inhabited areas of western Arabia between the Euphrates and the Red Sea.Nabatea, the kingdom of this people, flourished around the 2nd century b.c. Its capital was at Petra in modern-day Jordan.
