Etymology: < Halkomelem snənáyməxw < s- , nominalizing prefix + an unidentified root + -məxw people. In sense A. 2, Compounds < the name of a port and city on the east coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, named after the Nanaimo who formerly inhabited this region.
